Fire Block

CLARE VALLEY, SOUTH AUSTRALIA

Fire Block, in the Watervale Region of the Clare Valley, refers to a vineyard that was planted in 1926, predominantly to Grenache. The property had been previously designated as a ‘fireblock’ given its close proximity to the railway line, and out of concern that sparks from the steam locomotives may start a fire.

These days the vineyard is owned by Bill and Noel Ireland, who purchased the vineyard in 1995.

The dry grown vineyard is now nearly 91 years old and produces some of the most intensely flavoured fruit in the Clare Valley. Riesling, Old Vine Grenache, Old Vine Shiraz, and an Old Bush Vine GSM are skillfully made by the O’Leary Walker Team.
